Every room needs a purpose and a focal point. Purpose is easier to isolate - will you use the space for a bedroom, an office or a living space for relaxing and entertaining? Secondly and maybe most importantly what is the focal point. Old school design is that the seating arrangement supports the focal point. Let’s say the focal point is the view of the water, so one might arrange the furniture in a way that as many seats as possible face the water. In some instances the focal point might be a fireplace, bookshelf or even a special piece of furniture. Each room is different but feels most put together with a focal point paired with the purpose. Let’s consider a more avant garde pairing of art and accessories. We all have those spaces that lack either a clear purpose or focal point so let’s get creative and substitute art and accessories for the focal point + purpose. Creativity is so much more fun!

Artwork, photography, fabrics and pillows might be considered finishing touches or details but in the words of Charles Eames

“The Details are not the details. They make the design.”
